I remember the month after the track closed down, my parents stopped by the track. The gate was left open so my Dad pulled out onto the track. With Mom in the front passenger seat and me strapped in the back seat he made a full pass down the track. SS 396 four speed Chevelle banging through the gears, all the while my Mom was yelling for him to slow down! Great memory!! I am guessing it was 1970-72? I was 7 or 8 years old at the time.... Anybody know what year the track closed?

Shut down in 1972. Here's some pretty cool info on it.

There have actually been four drag strips in Fontana.
Fontana 1 was Gilfillan Filed. According to drag racing historian Bret Kepner, Fontana Airport was used as a drag strip in 1950-52, so it must have been barely active as an airfield at that time. My source and old photos is a very interesting story one worth reading if you are into the history of the tracks. http://www.members.tripod.com/airfie....htm#gilfillan

Fontana 2 is the track that probably has the most history and the one referred to as Fontana Drag City or Mickey Thompsons Fontana International Dragway. Source and photos http://www.standard1320.com/1320Hist...ks/Tracks.html

Fontana 3 was the track on the south side of the oval at the Auto Club Speedway.

Fontana 4 is the track that we now race at on the north side of the Speedway.

Those are some pretty cool pics. Didn't realize how many tracks there were. Be nice to see more old pics of old tracks.
